History Extension Seminar: The Project 2023

Focusing on The Project, this highly interactive online experience will equip students with the tools, advice and confidence to embark on their major project. Year 12 – S6 Teacher History Extension Seminar: The Project 2023 Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with speakers and panelists through an online Q&A.

We are proud to present a range of talks and workshops, delivered by practicing historians, archaeologists and museum and library professionals, which offer students fresh insights into historiography.

You will receive your webinar link a few days prior to the event. Please note that all links and passcodes are unique to your booking and valid for one person to use on one device only, sharing this link may result in losing your place.

This seminar will be recorded and available approximately one month after the live event. Please indicate at time of booking if you are attending live or requesting a recording. We strongly encourage you to attend the live event for an optimal experience.

Uluru Statement from the Heart: Read by Professor Megan Davis

Professor Megan Davis, member of the Referendum Council, reads out the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Megan was the person chosen to deliver the statement to the Australian people. Year 10 – S5 Teacher Uluru Statement from the Heart: Read by Professor Megan Davis The ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’, calls for the establishment of a ‘First Nations Voice’ in the Australian Constitution and a ‘Makarrata Commission’ to supervise a process of ‘agreement-making’ and ‘truth-telling’ between governments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This video can be used:
• To prompt class discussion around the topic.
• To provide accessible background information on the topic.
• In conjunction with other resources available from the Academy of the Social Sciences of Australia.

After viewing this video, students should be able to:
• Identify the three principals of the Statement – Voice, Treaty and Truth.
• Explain in simple terms, the problems facing First Nations Australians that constitutional reform seeks to address. Free Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia Professor Megan Davis is the Pro Vice-Chancellor Society (PVCS) at UNSW Sydney. Professor Davis isalso the Balnaves Chair of Constitutional Law, a Professor of Law and Director of the Indigenous Law Centre UNSW Law. She is a Cobble Cobble woman of the Barunggam Nation and a renowned constitutional lawyer and public law expert, focusing on advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Her work extends internationally, through roles at the United Nations, focusing on global Indigenous rights. In this capacity, she was elected by the UN Human Rights Council to the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples based in Geneva in 2017 and again in 2019 (2019-2022) and served previously as an expert member and Chair of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, UN Headquarters in New York (2011-2016). She is currently the Chair of the Expert Mechanism. Prof Davis is an Acting Commissioner of the NSW Land and Environment Court, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences. She is also a member of the Australian Rugby League Commission.

This major exhibition celebrates 100 years of Australia’s oldest & most-loved portrait award & reflects upon the changing face of our nation.
Streamed live at 12:30pm (AEDT), Tuesday 24th October 2023 Year 11 – S6 Year 12 – S6 TAFE Students Teacher Parent Curator’s Intro – Archie 100: A Century of the Archibald Prize Join Natalie Wilson, curator of Archie 100: A Century of the Archibald Prize and Curator of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of NSW, for a peek into some of the portraits and themes in the exhibition. Free National Portrait Gallery Natalie Wilson holds an MA (Art History & Theory) from the University of Sydney. She has curated numerous collection-based exhibitions at the AGNSW and authored essays, papers, and books on Australian and Pacific art.

Wilson curated Archie 100: A Century of the Archibald Prize, which opened at the AGNSW in June 2021 and has been touring national, state, and regional galleries since. In 2021 she featured in the three-part series Finding the Archibald, produced by Mint Pictures and screened nationally on ABC TV.

Brazen Hussies and V9 Australian Curriculum

Please join us online for a deep dive into the documentary Brazen Hussies and women’s history in V9 of the Australian Curriculum. Teacher Brazen Hussies and V9 Australian Curriculum To prepare our teachers to meet the new curriculum expectations around this rich moment in Australia’s history, the ACT History Teachers Association is holding a once-off special PD event in collaboration with colleagues from National Archives of Australia (NAA) and the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD).

This professional development will begin with a presentation and discussion from two history teachers in the ACT who have taught units on this period, who will share their unit and lesson plans with teachers connecting.

We will then be joined by a stellar panel to discuss this period of history, including some of the core players from the movement.

The panel will include:

Elizabeth Reid AO – the world’s first ever Women’s Adviser, within the Whitlam Government.
Biff Ward- Women’s Liberation activist, author.
Producers from the film ‘Brazen Hussies’, a nation-leading documentary on this period.
