Our courses are developed by Macquarie University academics and experienced school teachers to align with the NSW syllabus. Educational course content is delivered through video lessons, interactive activities and practice quizzes and is designed to support your students in developing a greater understanding of course content, prepare for assessments and aid their exam revision. It involves a refuge facility, a research facility, and a recovery facility, and for the first time, Platypus is on display at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Hear from Zoo keeper, James as he shares about the platypus, special features and their needs.

SeaWeek offers a fantastic opportunity to reestablish our connection with the ocean ecosystem and reflect on its profound impact on life on Earth. Despite the multiple layers of human impact on the marine environment, each of us can contribute to safeguarding the ocean by taking conscious steps to protect it.

Joining this virtual incursion will bring us together to celebrate the beauty of the sea. Kirsten Banks is a proud Wiradjuri woman who is a rising star in the field of astrophysics and science communication. After growing up in Ku-ring-gai country in Sydney, Kirsten completed her undergraduate studies at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 2018. She is currently pursuing a PhD in astrophysics at UNSW. Kirsten is also a passionate science communicator and frequently engages with the public through social media and public speaking events. She has appeared on numerous television programs and has been featured in various print and online publications. She is an advocate for diversity and inclusion in science and is actively involved in promoting science education and outreach to underrepresented communities. Journey into the world of butterflies with a butterfly scientist! Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Butterfly Science! Join us for a journey into the world of butterflies, led by a real-life butterfly scientist!

Delve into the differences between butterflies and moths, unravel the secrets of their vibrant colours, and explore their diverse world within the landscapes of Australia. Gain insights into the critical role butterflies play in ecosystems and learn how you can contribute to their conservation.

This session will be led by Marilia Fernandes Erickson who is a PhD candidate at Macquarie University. Currently her research is on aposematism (the use of warning coloration to tell potential predators that an animal is poisonous, venomous, or dangerous) in butterfly and moth communities. To do that, Marilia has been running around Australia with a butterfly catching net to figure out where these beautifully coloured butterflies are, and if their distribution and abundancy is dependent on factors like climate, predation, or mimics.
