For every nature poem received a tree is planted to help heal endangered habitats. We’ve planted 17,100+ poem trees in the last three years!

This workshop for Threatened Species Day features an exciting Red Room poet to guide secondary students through writing activities from our curriculum-aligned learning resource, help craft nature poems about threatened species and enrich learning outcomes across sustainability, First Nations cultures & histories, English & Science.

All POEM FOREST Prize entries will be published and in the running for $5,000 worth of prizes, including $500 cash, book packs, Garden tours, seeds and more! Our oceans play a vital role in our everyday lives. They provide us with countless benefits, from regulating our climate to providing us with food and recreation. In fact, the ocean economy contributes $1.5 trillion annually and is set to double by 2030, highlighting just how valuable and important our oceans truly are.

But it’s important to remember that with our increasing demands, we need to take action to protect our oceans. For World Oceans Day join marine scientist Vinuri Silva who works first hand with marine plastic pollution to understand it’s impact on our ocean and learn about the actions that individuals can take to reduce plastic pollution and ensure a healthy ocean ecosystem for generations to come.

Helena Fox lives by the ocean on Dharawal country in Wollongong, New South Wales. A novelist, poet and creative writing mentor, Helena runs writing workshops for people of all ages. Helena’s debut novel, How It Feels To Float, won the Prime Minister’s Literary Award and Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Writing for Young Adults in 2020. Her second novel, arriving early 2023, is called The Quiet and the Loud. Her poetry has been published by Red Room Poetry and in Admissions, an anthology of writing on mental health. Helena received her MFA in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College, USA. Her poem ‘Elegy for a living sea’ was commissioned for the 2023 POEM FOREST Prize. In this session you’ll discover diverse ecosystems across the globe and delve into environmental concerns like climate change, pollution and waste, and the decline of nature and biodiversity with Grace Blackburn, a Biologist and PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia. Grace will also explore practical steps that you can take in your home and local area that will help protect the environment.

This session aims to inspire positive change and foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural surroundings, for a better and greener future for all. To celebrate World Environment Day join us for an inspiring talk by two visionary minds, David Booth and Gigi Beretta. Kinder – ES1 Year 1 – S1 Year 2 – S1 Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Digital Schools Talk with David Booth and Gigi Beretta (Primary Schools) (Available on Demand from 5th June until 19th June) Professor David Booth and Giglia “Gigi” Beretta are Marine Ecologists at the University of Technology Sydney. In May 2019, they worked on installing a modular artificial reef along the Opera House sea wall as part of a research project to restore marine habitats and rebalance biodiversity around Bennelong Point.

Both passionate advocates for the environment, David and Gigi will share their journeys in preserving our planet, discuss their careers, the artificial reef and the way that the arts and science have come together for this project to empower the next generation to become eco-conscious leaders.

If your students have a question they would like to ask, you will have the opportunity to record it and send it in for David or Gigi to answer on the day. Questions must be sent no later than 14 March 2024. Further instructions on how to do this will be sent to you upon booking.
