Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Teacher Parent Fighting the fire ant – As a citizen scientist – Years 4-8 Red imported fire ants (fire ants) are invasive exotic ants that have been detected in Murwillumbah in northern NSW (November 2023). Before this, fire ants were not known to occur in NSW.
Fire ants are very aggressive ants that give very painful, severe stings that feel like being on fire. Fire ants have the potential to inhabit more than 99% of Australia. Fire ants can damage electrical and agricultural equipment, pets and livestock, kill native plants and animals, and damage ecosystems beyond repair. They will have disastrous consequences for our environment, society, culture and economy if they become established.
