Fighting the fire ant – As a citizen scientist – Years 9-12 (Stage 5, Stage 6, Teacher, Parent)

Live Event
08
Dec
Join this session to learn how to get involved as a citizen scientist to identify, report and protect NSW from the Red imported fire ant.

ACTIVITY OUTLINE:

Red imported fire ants (fire ants) are invasive exotic ants that have been detected in Murwillumbah in northern NSW (November 2023). Before this, fire ants were not known to occur in NSW.
Fire ants are very aggressive ants that give very painful, severe stings that feel like being on fire. Fire ants have the potential to inhabit more than 99% of Australia.  Fire ants can damage electrical and agricultural equipment, pets and livestock, kill native plants and animals, and damage ecosystems beyond repair. They will have disastrous consequences for our environment, society, culture and economy if they become established.
Join this session to hear from a DPI ant specialist to learn:
  • How to identify Red imported fire ants
  • How to identify fire ant mounds
  • Impact on the society, environment, agriculture and our culture
  • How DNA testing is being used to identify the state of origin of the ants in NSW
  • How to report sightings
  • How to get involved as a citizen scientist in fire ant prevention
