Explore the new Platypus Rescue Head Quarters at Dubbo

Every kid should get to see a Platypus in their lifetime, and we’re making sure that they can. Learn about the Platypus Rescue Headquarters at the Zoo in Dubbo. It involves a refuge facility, a research facility, and a recovery facility, and for the first time, Platypus is on display at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Hear from Zoo keeper, James as he shares about the platypus, special features and their needs.

Connecting to Nature to value our biodiversity in the local environment

Learn how to Nature Journal and value the biodiversity in your local environment. Links to a teaching program -13 lessons with loads of resources. Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Connecting to Nature to value our biodiversity in the local environment Students will explore, discuss and translate ideas with an authentic audience to determine how they can engage their community to value biodiversity in their local environment.
Through research, conducting investigations and experiences in class, student teams (2-4 max) will analyse the importance of biodiversity in their community. Teams will produce a plan and recommendations for their community to further engage the local community with the surrounding environment. Student teams will present their ideas/concepts to an authentic audience.
The students’ community may consist of their friends and family, their local community, their school community and/or their global community. Teachers might allocate student teams various environmental community engagement activities to investigate in their community, such as community gardens, nature journaling groups, bird watching, nature walks, business and/or school environmental activities or allow teams to decide on their area of inquiry. Recognise SeaWeek 2024 with this exploration of the interactions between the land and sea. Year 2 – S1 Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 SeaWeek 2024: Where the rivers meet the sea Eighty-five percent of Australians live within 50km of the coast. This session looks at the waste that washes downstream in our catchments, the impacts it has on our estuaries, wetlands and coastal areas where the rivers meets the sea.

In this program students will:

understand the different journey water takes through a catchment
learn how waste can enter the waterways
discover the impacts of waste on estuaries, wetlands and the coastal habitats
appreciate that what happens on land can impact our rivers and oceans.

Join Lizzie Speechley, a behavioural ecologist and PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia to celebrate World Wildlife Day. Lizzie has previously worked with big cats in South Africa and her current research explores the link between sociality and cognition in the Western Australian magpie, specifically through the use of social network analysis and cognitive testing. In this virtual incursion Lizzie will dive into the heart of global conservation efforts and share insights into the challenges and triumphs of protecting our planet’s precious biodiversity.

Lizzie will also discuss her experiences working with wildlife around the world and her career pathway for students that might be interested in getting involved with wildlife conservation.
