Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Teacher Parent Fighting the fire ant – As a citizen scientist – Years 4-8 Red imported fire ants (fire ants) are invasive exotic ants that have been detected in Murwillumbah in northern NSW (November 2023). Before this, fire ants were not known to occur in NSW.

Fire ants are very aggressive ants that give very painful, severe stings that feel like being on fire. Fire ants have the potential to inhabit more than 99% of Australia.  Fire ants can damage electrical and agricultural equipment, pets and livestock, kill native plants and animals, and damage ecosystems beyond repair. They will have disastrous consequences for our environment, society, culture and economy if they become established.

Butterfly Science!

Journey into the world of butterflies with a butterfly scientist! Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Butterfly Science! Join us for a journey into the world of butterflies, led by a real-life butterfly scientist!

Delve into the differences between butterflies and moths, unravel the secrets of their vibrant colours, and explore their diverse world within the landscapes of Australia. Gain insights into the critical role butterflies play in ecosystems and learn how you can contribute to their conservation.

This session will be led by Marilia Fernandes Erickson who is a PhD candidate at Macquarie University. Currently her research is on aposematism (the use of warning coloration to tell potential predators that an animal is poisonous, venomous, or dangerous) in butterfly and moth communities. To do that, Marilia has been running around Australia with a butterfly catching net to figure out where these beautifully coloured butterflies are, and if their distribution and abundancy is dependent on factors like climate, predation, or mimics. Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Celebrate National Agriculture Day with a Plant Scientist! Are you curious about how we can ensure a sustainable future with enough food for our growing population in the face of climate change? In a world where expanding agricultural land and water use are no longer options, the key to our food security lies in making plants stronger and better adapted to changing conditions.

Join Caitlin, a PhD student at the University of Queensland, to learn more about the intricate world of flowering genes and why flowers are so important. Caitlin will discuss her research into the DNA of flowering legumes and her experience in ag science, from completing field trials to growing plants in petri dishes! Caitlin will also explore how advancements in technology have changed ag science, particularly with her use of drones to quickly capture large amounts of data and machine learning to analyse plant genetics.
