Hungry bird gets the worm – Learn how animals raise their young!

Come and raise your own clutch of baby birds! Take them under your wing and learn all about the life history decisions that animals need to make when raising young. Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Hungry bird gets the worm – Learn how animals raise their young! Raising nestlings isn’t all it’s cracked up to be! Animals face many hard choices when raising young, including how to avoid predators, locate food and divide this food amongst themselves and their babies.

Join Lizzie Speechley, a PhD researcher from UWA studying Western Australian magpies and learn what it takes to successfully raise a clutch of baby birds.

In Hungry Birds players get to search for food and learn about the differences in food availability and the risks associated with different environments. Players then must decide how to allocate the food they have caught. Do you put all of your eggs in one basket by giving all of the food to one baby? Or do you hedge your bets and divide the food equally amongst all of the babies? And then how much food will you save for yourself?! You’ll have some tough decisions to make, but we will explore which strategies and decisions resulted in the most offspring surviving to leave the nest. The Fight for Survival

Animal fight club – how do animals fight and what makes a winner? Conduct your very own marine science experiment by bringing virtual 3D crabs to life without leaving the comfort of your classroom! Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 The Fight for Survival All animals fight – some fight using traits like weaponry while others fight for survival using more subtle ways like speed, cooperative behaviours or manipulation.

As a marine biologist, Hannah Moloney researches giant charismatic manta rays and the behaviours they use to scoop up their zooplankton prey using their huge face spoons. Cooperating with each other or “feeding with friends” is the manta ray way of fighting for resources.

In the videogame Reservoir Crabs, students will bring crabs to life using augmented reality to simulate a crab fight. They will explore the different traits that are important in determining who wins while acting as scientific “fight club” observers as they compete against each other.

While playing, anonymised data will be collected and graphed. This data will help students to put their analytical thinking caps on and be a part of the scientific process of hypothesis development, answering research questions and interpreting their own data. How sharp is your brain speed? Put it to the test by saving the planet’s cows from abduction!

Daily we react to everyone and everything around us without stopping to think -thanks to our brain skills. Immerse yourself in a video game to learn about it and test yours to save the planet’s cows! Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 How sharp is your brain speed? Put it to the test by saving the planet’s cows from abduction! Everyday our brain makes tonnes of reactions and judgements from information. This helps us to survive and interact appropriately with other people and our environment. This is mainly thanks to a fundamental set of brain skills called “cognitive skills” or “brain skills”.

Dr Amal Dameer is a doctor and scientist who uses cognitive tests to see why someone is not reacting very well to the everyday world. In this interactive workshop, students will learn about cognition, cognitive tests and what affects them by playing a fun and immersive game, where they get to save cows and/or haystacks that aliens are stealing from farms.

Anonymously collected student’s scores and reaction time data will be collected which will be graphed and used to discuss their reaction time and what could have influenced reaction times. This will enable them to interpret data scientifically and apply it to the real world! Girls and Science – Learn how to be a girl scientist in this game-focused virtual incursion

Join PhD student An Urooj to learn about automatic biases through a Psychology game! Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Girls and Science – Learn how to be a girl scientist in this game-focused virtual incursion Some biases aren’t a big deal. But sometimes, those biases can become a problem. For example, a lot of people think that girls are better at writing and reading, and boys are better at maths – even though this isn’t true at all! And this could lead boys and girls towards doing specific courses in school and even getting very different careers. For example, not studying science and choosing to stay at home rather than work in science.

In this lesson, we’ll be exploring the ideas of these internal biases a little more to get a better idea of our understanding of them. This will help us create a better world that exists without biases. We will do that through playing the game Psych Tests and then you will have the opportunity to answer some questions. Your data will anonymously be compared to other students to interpret the results and apply the learning of biases to wider contexts. Alien vs prey

How do you choose what to eat for lunch? Do other animals make similar choices? Get inside the mind of an extra-terrestrial predator as you attempt to survive as long as possible on an alien planet Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Alien vs prey A sea shell that shoots a poisonous harpoon, sharks with extendable jaws, spiders that fish their prey with a net – these all seem like characteristics from out of this world, but are found right here on earth! Have you ever wondered why such traits come to be?
In this session, students will test their survival skills by playing Xenon Crow, a videogame that uses augmented reality to simulate a foreign planet. Students will act as predators as they explore this new hostile environment to survive as long as possible. By doing so, they will learn which traits prey have evolved to stop them from becoming food, and which traits are important for predators to survive.
While students play, we will collect anonymised performance data and graph it, so that students can be a part of the scientific process by collecting and interpreting their own data! Brain and muscle communication, are you as fast as you can think?

Test your brain and see how quickly it can process information and react to different stimulus. Learn about cognitive traits and train your reaction time whilst playing a fun didactic videogame Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Brain and muscle communication, are you as fast as you can think? Our central nervous system (the brain) controls many physiological systems in our bodies, and a very important one is movement. Our brain communicates with our muscles allowing us to perform daily activities. Just as we can train our muscles to become stronger, we can train our brains to process information quicker. There can be large variability between individuals regarding brain-muscle communication. For example, this can be easily observed when some people are better at one sporting activity than others.

Join exercise scientist and dietitian, Karen Mackay, in exploring different brain- muscle activities and learn more about the important role our brain plays within movement. Put your students to the test and see how well they perform in different cognitive traits through the app REACTION PACKED. Here, students will collect data using games that combine decision making, movement and memory, so they can test their hypothesis, answer research questions, and come to conclusions.
