Brains vs. Computers

The ultimate battle! Join us with artist Jess Herrington for a workshop like no other.

#NPGDART Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Brains vs. Computers Science Week | Upper Primary School

In this online workshop we’ll compare the human brain with artificial intelligence. We’ll do some art activities to explore how each of us perceives visuals, then end with a creative challenge designing an artwork inspired by brains and computers.

To prepare

Grab some drawing materials – pencils, paper, crayons, whatever you have, and download DALL-E – an AI system that can create realistic images.

If you don’t want to sign up for a DALL-E account you can still join in using your normal (real!) drawing materials. Free National Portrait Gallery Jess Herrington is an artist and neuroscience PhD candidate. She specialises in visual perception – the science of how we see the world around us. In her creative work Jess creates surreal worlds exploring how we can represent ourselves in the internet age; and through play and interaction, experiments with how we see ourselves and others. Arludo Science Week: Spider Science

Join Arludo’s friendly neighbourhood spider biologist for Science Week spider fun! Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Arludo Science Week: Spider Science Arachnophobia (the fear of spiders) is one of the most common fears among humans. However, these small eight-legged animals are just misunderstood. Meet your friendly neighbourhood spider biologist (who used to have arachnophobia!), Anastasia Shavrova, and give these small eight-legged animals another chance!

Anastasia studies the different behaviours of spiders and what they do to impress their mates. Did you know spiders are very artistic & colourful. They play music to each other either through drumming on the ground or plucking the web like a guitar, they have some cool dance moves to try and impress the ladies, and some spiders are so colourful they give birds a run for their seeds.

Anastasia observes these different behaviours and tries to understand why spiders evolve such interesting behaviours and what these behaviours are used for. Spiders aren’t just cool for their behaviour, their silk, which is stronger than steel, can be used to make different materials such as bulletproof vests, instrumental strings, bandages, and clothing.

In this Science Week special we will explore the wonderful life of a spider and perhaps you’ll even start to see how these animals are important to our environment and maybe not so scary after all. Science Week: Bird Brains

Join us for Science Week to learn all about the fascinating minds of magpies! Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Science Week: Bird Brains Did you know that being social makes you smarter? Find out why in this special Science Week incursion on Bird Brains!

Lizzie is a behavioural ecologist working at the University of Western Australia. Her PhD investigates why certain individuals are smarter than others with one of the main theories being that social behaviour is what makes you smarter, which is also known as the Social Intelligence Hypothesis.

To test this theory Lizzie works with wild magpies. Despite the popular phrase “bird brain”, magpies demonstrate incredibly sophisticated cognitive abilities, including tool use and recognising human voices. As part of this research magpies are presented with a series of tasks to measure their cognition (or intelligence) and are also tested for social connectedness – who’s friends with who and who doesn’t get along. Combined, this allows researchers to test whether smarter magpies are more social.
