Climate solutions. Soon, computers will use ALL of our electricity!

We all love our devices but the growing number of computers could soon use our entire energy supply…unless we change. Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Climate solutions. Soon, computers will use ALL of our electricity! As part of the Powerhouses 100 Climate Conversations weekly podcast, selected innovators have presented simple positive messages to schools about what can be done to save our planet.

Each year we produce billions of computer chips. They are used in almost everything electrical and consume around 10% of the world’s entire energy production. If we continue to produce more of the same technology, they will consume ALL of our electricity within a few decades. This is clearly not sustainable.

Professor Michael Fuhrer from Monash University and his team are looking at new chip technologies that are just one atom thick making them 10 times more efficient. Is graphene the new silicon? Why are billions of chips made in just one of three factories around the world? If you love what computers do for us, you need to see what we need to do for them as we seek climate solutions.

This is an edited recording of an interview on Friday 28 October 2022 from the Powerhouse.
