Australian Manufacturing Week STEM Webinar

The First Fleet

Set sail on this virtual excursion to discover more about the First Fleet. Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 The First Fleet This virtual excursion focuses on the experience of convicts on the First Fleet and the early years in the colony. Using primary sources from State Library collections, students will investigate the journey of the First Fleet, the everyday life of convicts and touch on the experiences of Aboriginal people.

Come on a scavenger hunt adventure! Students will be asked to collect a list of objects from around their home or classroom to inspire a fun and unique story. Students will be asked to collect a list of objects from around their homes to help inspire a fun and unique story.

Speaking, listening, and storytelling skills will be built while working with a presenter to create an original story using their scavenged stimulus. This workshop explores the structure and stages of a narrative, while encouraging the development of original, imaginative story ideas inspired by a child’s own world.

Ocean Animals Quiz (Years 3-6)

Join the Australian National Maritime Museum as we celebrate World Turtle Day and World Environment Day with this Ocean Animal themed quiz!

  Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Ocean Animals Quiz (Years 3-6) We challenge anyone in years 3-6 to test your knowledge about ocean animals and learn some fun facts along the way. The online quiz will go for about 45min and there will be time for questions after.

To play the quiz, students will need to visit www.kahoot.it or download the Kahoot! App. They will then be asked to enter the code provided at the start of the session.  Students can participate as individuals or in teams, either from school or home. Students can also use a pen and paper if you experience technical difficulties.

You can let us know if there are any topics you would like to see by completing a short survey here.  

This session will start at 2pm for all states observing Australian Eastern Daylight Time (NSW, ACT, Qld, Vic & Tas), 1.30pm for Schools in SA and NT and 12 midday for WA. Please contact us if you would like to enquire about a session to suit your local timezone.

Step back in time to 1813 and follow the journey of Gregory Blaxland, William Charles Wentworth and William Lawson.  Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Significant Individuals: Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson Step back in time to 1813 and follow the journey of Gregory Blaxland, William Charles Wentworth and William Lawson as they make their way over the Blue Mountains to find out what was on the other side. Motivated by thoughts of adventure and determined to find more grazing land to the west, Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson entered the history books when they headed up the mountains, taking almost the exact same path as the Great Western Highway does today.

In this virtual excursion, students will engage with original primary source material from the State Library collection and uncover how these three explorers contributed to the development of Australia and why their adventure is still significant today. In this free digital talk for schools, Sami Bayly talks about the world’s weird and wonderful animals to celebrate World Environment Day and World Oceans Day. Kinder – ES1 Year 1 – S1 Year 2 – S1 Year 3 – S2 Digital Talk with Sami Bayly 10:30am AEST 6th June Years K-3 Sami Bayly is a natural history illustrator who loves all things weird and wonderful. She is the author of The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Peculiar Pairs and other award-winning encyclopaedias. Her distinctive illustrations blend vibrant watercolours with scientific drawing and offer children a unique perspective on wildlife.

Sami created these books as she finds the beauty and importance of all animals regardless of their appearance, and wishes to share her appreciation with others. In this talk Sami Bayly talks about the world’s weird and wonderful animals to celebrate World Environment Day and World Oceans day, and the impacts of climate change.

If your students have a question that they would like to ask, you will have the opportunity to record it and send it in for Sami to answer on the day. Questions will need to be received by Sydney Opera House no later than Monday 30th of May. Further instructions on how to do this will be sent to you upon booking.
