Where the Forest Meets the Sea – Drama in the classroom (Stage 3)

This lesson uses the drama and literacy strategies ‘Embodied Reaction & Post Cards’ and ‘Conscience Alley’ to explore pros and cons style thinking around an imaginative, coastal development.
ACTIVITY OUTLINE:
How it works:
In this video and lesson plan, ATYP Teaching Artists will talk you through exercises that can be watched as a class, or for you to watch before you teach the lesson.
Activities:
1. Embodied Reaction & Postcards: Drawing on Jeannie Baker’s book Where the Forest Meets the Sea, students will begin by working alone before being invited to share their responses to the text and discuss their differing perspectives. In Postcards students then share their unique point of view while contributing to a larger group project.
2. Conscience Alley then illustrates the decision-making process in a practical and exploratory way.
Students will:
• Increase understanding of narrative storytelling
• Work together to create a coherent work for an audience
• Communicate using clear instructions
• Engage in imaginative play
