STANSW 2023 – Achieving mastery through flipped learning – Suren Mendis meriSTEM (Teacher)

Flipped learning is a teaching approach which has been in prominence for at least a decade.
ACTIVITY OUTLINE:
The strategy entails reversing or “flipping” the traditional approach to teaching, allowing students to engage with content outside of the classroom and then proceed to use class time for active learning tasks.
This approach can lead to a range of benefits including increased engagement, more opportunities for differentiation and improved mastery.
The meriSTEM program is an initiative based at the Australian National University, dedicated to designing free, high-quality resources for flipped learning. Whilst the resources have been used for a range of purposes in different contexts across Australia, data has also revealed major potential for improved student mastery.
This session seeks to open discussions around barriers to student mastery. It then aims to propose ways in which flipped learning can helps address these barriers. It also highlights how flipped learning can be particularly helpful for teachers who are new to the profession, or teaching out of area, to achieve mastery.
