ACTIVITY OUTLINE:
Through the lens of the Visual Arts curriculum, students will explore portraits of and by First Nations people in the National Portrait Collection.
First Nations | Foundation – Year 2
This interactive session for Foundation to Year 2 students utilises a variety of portraits of and by First Nations people in the National Portrait Gallery’s collection to explore questions such as why people make art, the techniques they utilise and cultural significance.
Key curriculum links:
- Explore ideas, experiences, observations and imagination to create visual artworks and design, including considering ideas in artworks by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists [ACAVAM106]
- Use and experiment with different materials, techniques, technologies and processes to make artworks [ACAVAM107]
- Respond to visual artworks and consider where and why people make visual artworks, starting with visual artworks from Australia, including visual artworks of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples [ACAVAR109]
Please ensure each student has access to paper and pencils for the drawing activity.

Students require some sheets of paper and a pencil/crayon/texta to draw with.
This virtual learning program will be delivered via Zoom. Upon booking, you will be sent a link to follow.
To facilitate the best possible experience we require a teacher to rename the Zoom connection to appropriately reflect those behind the camera. Your school name, student level/s and student numbers is preferred eg. Nolan PS – Year 1 – 30
We prefer you have your cameras turned on as it assists to aid participant interaction with our shared community.
