Indigenous Literacy Day 2021

On Demand

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation proudly presents Indigenous Literacy Day, celebrating stories and language. This delightful virtual event enlightens and engages primary and early learners in song, stories and language.

It’s time to celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day!

Hosted by dynamic performer, best selling author, musician, artist and Indigenous Literacy Foundation ambassador, Gregg Dreise, a proud descendant from the Goomeri and Yuwalayaay people in south western Queensland and north west of New South Wales.

And of course, to add a touch of celebrity charm, we have a special guest appearance by Australia’s favourite pop singer and ILF ambassador, Jessica Mauboy.

This 25-minute event for students aged 4-11 includes two delightful animations illustrating Kriol language:

  1. Yakai Beibigel
  2. Tudei en longtaim

Kids will delight in the fun and interactive nature of the event – from yelling out Yakai Gregg! everytime they see a twirling, whirling boomerang, to singing and moving along with Gregg’s lively performance.  Children will take a virtual flight to the Tiwi Islands to join local children at the island swimming hole and on a hunt for mussels in the mangroves.

What a way to celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day!

Teacher Resources can be downloaded from the Indigenous Literacy Day Page on the Sydney Opera House Website – https://www.sydneyoperahouse.com/schools/whatson-schools/digitalclassroomexperiences/2021/indigenous-literacy-day.html

  • Catholic schools unable to use the YouTube LIVE links due to website filtering for their school network.  Here is the info I have provided as some of the sessions are YouTube LIVE only:Your school will have to manage your students’ access to YouTube LIVE as per your school website filtering policies.  However, one solution which may work for your school if YouTube is restricted for your students, is for you as the teacher to create your own ZOOM Meeting for the same time slot as the DART Learning event and invite your students as you would normally do for any school ZOOM meeting. Then you as the host, would join the event YouTube session LIVE and share your screen for students to watch.

Proudly presented by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation in collaboration with Sydney Opera House.
