How to spot an expert (Stage 5)
Expert or imposter? How to spot the difference!
Find out how to be sure you’re getting reliable, factual information when you watch, listen, read or scroll.
ACTIVITY OUTLINE:
It seems everyone is an expert – but how can you tell the real deal from the fakers?
In this short explainer video, Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley and Dr Ken Henry from the Australian National University give their tips on how to spot a genuine expert and avoid being sucked into a vortex of misinformation.
After viewing this video, students will be able to:
- identify factors that can affect an individual’s ability to find reliable, evidence-based information,
- identify one or more ways to investigate a commentator’s credentials.
Use it as a conversation starter or launching point for more in-depth investigation into the influence of a range of media, including social media, in shaping community attitudes, and the challenges to sustaining a resilient democracy in the face of mis- and disinformation.
This resource is useful for students in Years 9 and 10 studying English and Civics and Citizenship.
