How does milk get from the cow to the drinking stage? (Early Stage 1, Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3)

On Demand

Ever wondered how milk from a cow on a farm gets to the glass you drink at home. Farmer Jess gives you and your students a taste of how milk is pasteurised and why.

ACTIVITY OUTLINE:

Join Jess Micallef, Co-Founder – A Smart Farmer (Dairy farmer, Camden)
As she gives a summary of how milk gets from a cow on a farm to your glass at home.

Students will learn:
• What do dairy farmers do each day?
• What do the cows eat?
• Why are dairy pellets important to a cow’s diet?
• What is a separator? See a separator in action, but why is it used?

A slide is presented as a suggested discussion points / video can be paused whilst students discuss with a partner or class collective.
• What colour and consistency should milk be?
• What are some dairy products that you know of?
• Why do we need to pasteurise our milk?
