EXPLORE WATERCOLOUR With Fiona McMonagle (Stage 3, Stage 4)
Discover the wonders of watercolour painting with artist Fiona McMonagle.
Program developed and delivered on 22 March 2024 in collaboration with the National Gallery of Victoria.
ACTIVITY OUTLINE:
This virtual event will show students how images and artworks inspire Fiona’s art-making practice.
Participants will also see how an artist experiments with materials and techniques throughout the different stages of developing an artwork. Follow along in the classroom as Fiona demonstrates different watercolour techniques that students can further develop and use to create unique works of art.
This program will also include suggestions for art-making activities that you can implement in the art room or classroom beyond the event.
Students will:
- engage in some of the developmental stages of the creative process under the guidance of a practicing artist
- experiment with watercolour paints to create different effects on paper
- develop painting techniques that can be applied to the development of an artwork.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Melbourne-based artist Fiona McMonagle is known for her watercolour portraits. She pushes the boundaries of ink and watercolour by exploring its use in moving image as well as creating large-scale works. Since graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting), Fiona has exhibited extensively throughout Australia, both in highly successful solo exhibitions as well as curated group shows. Most recently she exhibited as part of Portrait23: Identity at the National Portrait Gallery, and the Art Gallery of South Australia as part of the exhibition Frida and Diego: Love and Revolution. Her work is held in numerous public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, National Portrait Gallery, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Monash University Museum of Art, UQ Art Museum, Newcastle Regional Art Gallery, Artbank and Maitland Regional Art Gallery.

This program will be accessible via YouTube recording once a booking/registration has been made via DART
Students participating in this program will need:
- watercolour paints (you can use tubes of paint or watercolour palettes)
- watercolour brushes or soft paintbrushes
- plain cartridge or watercolour paper
- a water pot and water
- a graphite pencil
- erasers (optional)
