Journey into the world of butterflies with a butterfly scientist!

ACTIVITY OUTLINE:

Join us for a journey into the world of butterflies, led by a real-life butterfly scientist!

Delve into the differences between butterflies and moths, unravel the secrets of their vibrant colours, and explore their diverse world within the landscapes of Australia. Gain insights into the critical role butterflies play in ecosystems and learn how you can contribute to their conservation.

This session will be led by Marilia Fernandes Erickson who is a PhD candidate at Macquarie University. Currently her research is on aposematism (the use of warning coloration to tell potential predators that an animal is poisonous, venomous, or dangerous) in butterfly and moth communities. To do that, Marilia has been running around Australia with a butterfly catching net to figure out where these beautifully coloured butterflies are, and if their distribution and abundancy is dependent on factors like climate, predation, or mimics.
