All About Women (Digital On Demand Talks): Influencers are the New Public Intellectuals

On INSTA you’re just as likely to get a lesson in medieval architecture as you are a teeth-whitening strip.  What’s it mean for education & public discourse to be wrapped up with online personas. Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Year 11 – S6 Year 12 – S6 TAFE Students Teacher Parent All About Women (Digital On Demand Talks): Influencers are the New Public Intellectuals For a long time, the word ‘influencer’ conjured stereotypes of activewear and dubious hot takes.

But it’s 2024 and social media has well-and-truly revolutionised the public square. Today, the word influencer can refer to an activist or academic who shares short videos on TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram to explain complex concepts on niche subjects for a global audience. From Substack to Twitter threads, podcasting to Patreon, there are many opportunities to monetise knowledge-sharing. What does it mean for women to be able to build audiences free from traditional gatekeepers? Or are the gatekeepers now just the shady algorithms of BigTech bros? Come along for a heated and hilarious debate with five very public, very intellectual influencers.

All About Women (Digital On Demand Talks): Yellowface with Rebecca F. Kuang

On the heels of her satirical sensation Yellowface crushing the bestseller lists, join Rebecca F. Kuang as she takes on the complexities of diversity, racism and cultural appropriation today. Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Year 11 – S6 Year 12 – S6 TAFE Students Teacher Parent All About Women (Digital On Demand Talks): Yellowface with Rebecca F. Kuang The novel Yellowface by Rebecca F. Kuang is a worldwide “zeitgeist” publishing sensation. When June Hayward’s friend, bestselling author Athena Liu, dies in a freak accident, June acts quickly – and steals Athena’s manuscript about Chinese labourers. She doesn’t exactly pretend to be Asian-American but she also doesn’t correct anyone who mistakes her background, either. Brimming with dark humour and vindictive characters with dubious morals (so just like real life), Kuang’s smart and sardonic commentary has everyone asking questions. Who gets to profit off our hunger for cultural diversity? Do people with marginalised identities have to commodify family and personal trauma to make it big? Join this conversation with Rebecca F. Kuang to explore a world capitalising on race and the complexities behind who gets to tell what stories.

NSWIS LIGHTS UP – SHANE ROSE – OLYMPIAN

Shane Rose was introduced to horse riding as a five-year-old when he was enrolled as a member of the Forest Hills Pony Club, and it was love at first ride – although, his first pony Mickey Mouse was nothing like the loveable Disney character.

When Rose realised he didn’t possess the height or speed that was required to pursue a rugby career at the famous Warringah Rats, he focussed his attention on horse riding. After finishing high school his parents paid for him to go to England, and then ranches in America, to learn the horse trade. The trip opened Rose’s eyes to the world he wanted to be a part of, and upon his return to Australia he took his first tentative steps of turning his passion for horses into a successful and respected business.

Horse riding comes with dangers, but Roses’s worse injury occurred out of the saddle when a young thoroughbred he was teaching to go into a starting gate kicked out and connected with the bottom of the face. The damage was horrendous. Besides being in a coma for a week and requiring blood transfusions, surgeons asked Rose’s wife to provide them with a photo so they could rebuild his face.

NSWIS LIGHTS UP – TILLY KEARNS – OLYMPIAN

Growing up with a father who was an Australian Rugby Union Wallaby legend, Tilly Kearns was inspired from a young age to represent her country in sport. She provides an insight into her family and how they have been instrumental in instilling values to help her become the athlete she is, that is hard work and achieving quietly – hitting your goals with humility.

She grew up loving the water, was a decent swimmer and dreamt about being an Olympic butterfly swimmer. Olympian Geoff Huegill, who won two Olympic medals and six world champion titles, including 50 metres butterfly was her idol. Not knowing anything about water polo, Tilly put up her hand to help out a school team which needed an extra player. She was ‘thrown in the deep end’ and from that moment on loved water polo. She shares her love of challenges and pressure.
