Looking for ways to make civics and citizenship more dynamic, relevant and memorable? Experience the Parliamentary Education Office’s professional learning workshop. Teacher Teaching civics and citizenship: a parliamentary approach (secondary teachers) This 2 hour TQI accredited interactive workshop is aligned to the Australian Curriculum and is suitable for secondary teachers across Australia.

This program addresses the following AITSL standards for proficient teachers:

2.1 Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area.

6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practice.

During this workshop, teachers will have the opportunity to:

enhance their knowledge and understanding of the Australian Parliament
develop skills and techniques to engage students with Australia’s system of government and how our democracy works
experience fun and engaging classroom activities that explore the function and significance of the Australian Parliament

Documentary Portraiture

This Virtual Highlight Tour will be delivered using Zoom. Year 11 – S6 Year 12 – S6 TAFE Students Teacher Parent Documentary Portraiture Our National Photographic Portrait Prize 2023 series begins with Adam Ferguson!

Join us and Adam as he chats about his practice, journalistic themes and being a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize five times.

Adam Ferguson first gained recognition for his work in 2009 when he embarked on a survey of the US-led war in Afghanistan, working as a photojournalist on assignment for Time Magazine, The New York Times and National Geographic. In the years since, he has worked internationally documenting the consequences of geopolitical conflicts on civilian populations.

Their understanding of the role of the artist and the audience builds on their experience. As an audience, students focus their attention on the artwork and respond to it. They consider why and how audiences respond to artworks.

Explore ideas and artworks from different cultures and times, including artwork by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, to use as inspiration for their own representations
Use materials, techniques and processes to explore visual conventions when making artworks

The interactive portraiture discussion provides opportunities to develop historical understanding through key concepts, including evidence, continuity and change, cause and effect, perspectives, empathy, significance and contestability. These concepts will be investigated within a particular portrait (and its historical context) to facilitate an understanding of the past and to provide a focus for historical inquiries. Teacher How Kids Helpline can support your school and community Presented by Brooke, accredited Kids Helpline counsellor, an expert in the field. Teachers and Education Staff can see a Kids Helpline counsellor and put a face to Australia’s only free, private, and confidential 24/7 phone and online counselling service for young people aged 5 to 25.
This video session can offer teachers and education staff further knowledge and understanding of mental health services, which may help students and young people overcome some common barriers to help-seeking, such as demystifying, reducing stigma and normalising counselling.

To start, you’ll ease into the session with a mindfulness exercise and some stretches before kicking things off. Next, we’ll warm up your art-muscles with some rapid sketches and break down portrait structure into simplified shapes. Then we’ll get into the meaty section where you’ll be exploring facial shapes and angles, and balancing analytical drawing with the freedom of mark making.

First Nations Perspectives in Visual Arts

Teachers – celebrate First Nations stories with version 9.0 of the F-10 Australian curriculum.

Using the scope and sequence of Visual Arts in version 9.0 of the Australian curriculum, First Nations educators will speak to First Nations specific content descriptors and match them with artworks, ideas, themes and learning opportunities.

This program will highlight the central ideas of the artworks in parallel to a selection of visual artworks under the ‘Exploring and Responding’ strand. Ayman Kaake (he/him) is an award-winning Lebanon-born Australian photo-media artist based in Melbourne who explores diasporic melancholy and the agony of exile through contemplative portraiture and sculptural, styled poses.

Joey Chan (her/she) is a portrait photographer based in Melbourne, who appreciates beauty in the ordinary, and so in her practice tells visual stories of everyday people – presenting their individuality and an insight into their lives.

For Our Elders

This Virtual Highlight Tour will be delivered using Zoom. Year 11 – S6 Year 12 – S6 TAFE Students Teacher Parent For Our Elders Join, 2022 and 2023 National Photographic Portrait Prize finalist Jacob Nash as he discusses portraiture through the lens of this year’s NAIDOC theme, For Our Elders.

Jacob Nash is a descendant of the Daly River people west of Darwin, and has spent the last 20 years living, working and creating in Sydney on Eora Country. After graduating from the NIDA Design Course in 2005, in 2010 he designed the set for of earth & sky for Bangarra and received a Green Room Award for Best Design in Dance. He was appointed Artist-in-Residence at Bangarra the following year; and then Bangarra Head of Design through February 2023.

A Fijian Perspective

This Virtual Highlight Tour will be delivered using Zoom. Year 11 – S6 Year 12 – S6 TAFE Students Teacher Parent A Fijian Perspective Join us as we celebrate Pride Month with poet Peter Sipeli and visual artist Kirikiti Juna, as they talk about life and portraits from their uniquely Fijian LGBTIQA+ perspective.

Kirikiti Juna is a Suva based visual artist. After losing his mum, Kiti returned to his family homestead to help care for his young brother, who lives with an intellectual disability. It was through caring for his brother that Kiti developed his creative practice which explores heritage, national memory.

Peter Sipeli has more than two decades of expertise in using and managing advocacy through artistic expression. He is an arts manager, a gay activist who uses storytelling as advocacy, and is a supporter of the Spoken Word Movement in Fiji.
