Fire-Ed Up Challenge – Cultural Burning

Bushfires can be devastating to local ecosystems. Discover what is being done to help our habitats in the face of severe bushfires. Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Fire-Ed Up Challenge – Cultural Burning About the Fire-Ed Up Challenge

Students will have 6-weeks to complete a STEM-based design sprint focused on challenges posed by bushfires and the Australian bushfire management sector. Teams will select from a set of three scenarios and design a solution presented either as a 90-second video pitch or poster.

The Fire-Ed Up Design Challenge is supported by a series of informative webinars, led by experts in the field, designed to provide participants with essential knowledge, insights, and tools to better understand bushfire management and to aid them in their challenge tasks.

Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Significant Individuals: Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson Step back in time to 1813 and follow the journey of Gregory Blaxland, William Charles Wentworth and William Lawson as they make their way over the Blue Mountains to find out what was on the other side. Motivated by thoughts of adventure and determined to find more grazing land to the west, Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson entered the history books when they headed up the mountains, taking almost the exact same path as the Great Western Highway does today.

In this virtual excursion, students will engage with original primary source material from the State Library collection and uncover how these three explorers contributed to the development of Australia and why their adventure is still significant today. Dr Kate Brandis is an applied ecologist with over 20 years experience researching the waterbirds, wetlands and rivers of the Murray-Darling Basin in eastern Australia.

Her team, the Waterbirds Aerial Survey Team, were the winners of the 2023 NSW Environment and Heritage Eureka Prize for Applied Environmental Research. They have conducted one of the largest and longest-running wildlife surveys in the world. As well as influencing the Murray-Darling Basin Plan and nomination and management of Ramsar-listed wetlands, their data has contributed to the gazettal of three new national parks, and conservation of waterbirds and freshwater ecosystems, including rivers.

Dr Iman Roohani
UNSW

Dr Iman Roohani is a biomedical engineer who has developed several novel biomaterials for the treatment of bone defects and orthopaedic implants.

His team, the UNSW Bone Ink Printing Team, was a finalist for the 2023 ANSTO Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology for their use of 3D printing technology to construct living cell-laden structures that closely replicate real bones. With potential for directly repairing or replacing patients’ bones, this breakthrough offers substantial promise in the fields of regenerative medicine, orthopaedics and dentistry.

Dr Ricky Spencer
Western Sydney University

Dr Ricky Spencer is a zoologist and researcher of vertebrate pest control methodologies, working on the ‘Turtle Crisis” in the Murray River, as well as evaluating optimal fox management strategies for managing nest predation on turtles and water birds.

His team, 1 Million Turtles, were the winners of the 2023 Department of Industry, Science and Resources Eureka Prize for Innovation in Citizen Science. The 1 Million Turtle Team’s Community Conservation Program uses the TurtleSAT app to involve citizen scientists in hands-on activities such as habitat construction and restoration, nest protection and fox management. Emphasising STEM literacy and First Nations knowledge, the Australia-wide program has influenced policy, and saved over 1000 freshwater turtles and 200 nests in 2022 alone.

Women in Photography: Art and Film

Across three interactive sessions this series (13, 20 and 27 October) will take a deep dive into six leading Australian women photographers. Join one or two online sessions or the entire series!

Brazen Hussies and V9 Australian Curriculum

Please join us online for a deep dive into the documentary Brazen Hussies and women’s history in V9 of the Australian Curriculum. Teacher Brazen Hussies and V9 Australian Curriculum To prepare our teachers to meet the new curriculum expectations around this rich moment in Australia’s history, the ACT History Teachers Association is holding a once-off special PD event in collaboration with colleagues from National Archives of Australia (NAA) and the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD).

This professional development will begin with a presentation and discussion from two history teachers in the ACT who have taught units on this period, who will share their unit and lesson plans with teachers connecting.

We will then be joined by a stellar panel to discuss this period of history, including some of the core players from the movement.

The panel will include:

Elizabeth Reid AO – the world’s first ever Women’s Adviser, within the Whitlam Government.
Biff Ward- Women’s Liberation activist, author.

Making a Music Track – Interactive Workshop

Fusing technology & music, students will develop their music-making skills while collaborating with a live artist to express themselves musically. Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Making a Music Track – Interactive Workshop In this live workshop, students will work with our facilitator to explore music skills and techniques to express an idea or story.

Students will develop aural skills by exploring and recognising elements of music such as dynamics and rhythm. They will be invited to discuss the purpose and meanings behind music and then, collaborate with the facilitator to create their own compositions.

Through recording of sounds in their environment, pre-recorded sounds and learning some beatboxing skills, students will create and organise a series of sounds to express their story.

Using a smart phone or other digital device, students can capture their compositions and learn how to use technology to enhance their compositions. Exploring Media Literacy with Matt Cosgrove and Eva Amores

Join us as we connect with authors of the Worst Week Ever series Matt Cosgrove and Eva Amores to talk media literacy! Students will explore examples of media literacy featured in Matt and Eva’s books. Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Exploring Media Literacy with Matt Cosgrove and Eva Amores Students will have the opportunity to hear Matt and Eva talk about writing and illustrating the Worst Week Ever series. They will take a closer look at and critically reflect on examples of advertising, social media and news from their latest book in the series Thursday.  Students will also have an opportunity draw a campaign poster for Justin Chase, download the template via the MoAD Learning website. Free Museum of Australian Democracy Eva Amores has worked for the Sydney Opera House and the ABC. She was born in The Philippines and moved to Australia in high school. She likes shoes, travelling and more shoes.

Matt Cosgrove is the best-selling author/illustrator of Macca the Alpaca with over a million books in print worldwide. He was born and raised in Western Sydney. He likes chocolate, avoiding social interactions and more chocolate.

Eva and Matt met when they were randomly placed together for a group assignment at University twenty-five years ago and they’ve been collaborating ever since but Worst Week Ever is their first book series together. Created during lockdown after the pandemic turned their working lives upside down, the hilarious 7 part series about one kid having the worst week of his life has been the subject of fierce bidding wars amongst overseas publishers and is being rolled out across the globe in over 30 territories and languages (so far!)

Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Making a Music Track – Interactive Workshop In this live workshop, students will work with our facilitator to explore music skills and techniques to express an idea or story.

Students will develop aural skills by exploring and recognising elements of music such as dynamics and rhythm. They will be invited to discuss the purpose and meanings behind music and then, collaborate with the facilitator to create their own compositions.

Through recording of sounds in their environment, pre-recorded sounds and learning some beatboxing skills, students will create and organise a series of sounds to express their story.

Using a smart phone or other digital device, students can capture their compositions and learn how to use technology to enhance their compositions.
