Portraits on Country

First Nations | Foundation – Year 2 

This interactive session for Foundation to Year 2 students utilises a variety of portraits of and by First Nations people in the National Portrait Gallery’s collection to explore questions such as why people make art, the techniques they utilise and cultural significance.

History | Year 3 – Year 6 

This interactive session for Stage 2 and 3 students uses portraiture to provide opportunities for learners to develop and deepen their understanding of Australian history. Evidence, continuity and change, cause and effect, perspectives and empathy will be used as tools to investigate portraits in our collection within their historical context.

Making a Music Video: with Motion Capture – Interactive Workshop 23rd October ’24 2pm high school session

Fusing technology & movement, students will develop their visual storytelling skills and collaborate with a live artist to create a movement-based animation. Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Making a Music Video: with Motion Capture – Interactive Workshop 23rd October ’24 2pm high school session The team are all here at the Sydney Opera House to create a new music video, but there’s one key role missing….the choreographer! Luckily our students have shown up online to take on this important role.
With the help of the motion capture performers, the students are guided through making the artistic decisions to create a music video. They will engage in movement activities to uncover the story they want to tell and decide how they can capture that story through visual storytelling.
Students will be introduced to all the key people in their team. They will experience how to create a dance piece, both from a production and creative perspective.
At the end, we’ll capture your best moves, fusing our technology with your creativity. But will the music video sink or soar? The creative team will decide!

Significant Individuals: Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson

Step back in time to 1813 and follow the journey of Gregory Blaxland, William Charles Wentworth and William Lawson. Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Significant Individuals: Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson Step back in time to 1813 and follow the journey of Gregory Blaxland, William Charles Wentworth and William Lawson as they make their way over the Blue Mountains to find out what was on the other side. Motivated by thoughts of adventure and determined to find more grazing land to the west, Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson entered the history books when they headed up the mountains, taking almost the exact same path as the Great Western Highway does today.

In this virtual excursion, students will engage with original primary source material from the State Library collection and uncover how these three explorers contributed to the development of Australia and why their adventure is still significant today. Unleash the artist within and embark on a journey of self-expression through the lens of a smartphone! In this workshop explore self-portraiture, guided by renowned contemporary artist, Lucky Lartey. Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Smart Phone Self Portraits with Lucky Lartey (On Demand for all of term 4) Self-portraiture is an art form that goes beyond capturing an image; it’s an introspective exploration of identity, emotions, and unique perspective on the world.

Gone are the days where extravagant and expensive equipment was required to make beautiful art. In this workshop Lucky will guide students in creating beautiful photographs using the smart phone they already have in their school bag!

Lucky will share his best tips and tricks for creating artful images that express the unique personality of each student. Threatened Species Day – POEM FOREST Secondary Workshop

For every nature poem received a tree is planted to help heal endangered habitats. We’ve planted 17,100+ poem trees in the last three years!

This workshop for Threatened Species Day features an exciting Red Room poet to guide secondary students through writing activities from our curriculum-aligned learning resource, help craft nature poems about threatened species and enrich learning outcomes across sustainability, First Nations cultures & histories, English & Science.

All POEM FOREST Prize entries will be published and in the running for $5,000 worth of prizes, including $500 cash, book packs, Garden tours, seeds and more! Teachers should allow additional class time to edit and submit poems to the prize via our digital entry form. This can be a fun digital literacy task.
