Too much; too little; too dirty?: Water in Australia (Stage 4)

On Demand

How much water have you used today?

Do you ever wonder where it comes from…and where it goes?

Find out how water is used in Australia, using the Murray Darling Basin as an example.

ACTIVITY OUTLINE:

It’s time to tap into water in Australia – what happens when there’s too much, too little or it’s too dirty?

In this short explainer video, economics expert Professor Quentin Grafton from the Australian National University explains how water is used and managed in Australia. He talks about what we need to consider if we want to make sure everyone in Australia has access to safe, clean water for drinking, washing, farming and using in industry.

After viewing this video, students will be able to:

  • identify factors that can affect the provision of safe water to Australian communities,
  • identify one or more ways in which the Murray-Darling Basin is vital to Australia’s water infrastructure.

Use it as a conversation starter or launching point for more in-depth investigation into the the uses of water in Australia and impacts of climate change and human behaviour on water availability.

This resource is useful for students in Years 7 studying Geography.
