The Voice referendum explained (Stage 4, Stage 5)

On Demand

Wondering what the Voice referendum was all about?

This video explainer will answer all your questions!

ACTIVITY OUTLINE:

In October 2023, Australians went to the polls to vote in a referendum to change the Constitution.

This explainer video provides background information about the forming of the Australian Constitution and the steps required to implement a change to the Constitution. The context and development of the referendum on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament is also explained in an accessible way.

After viewing this video, students will be able to:

  • identify the steps needed to make a change to the Constitution of Australia,
  • identify the intended aim of the Voice referendum,
  • briefly explain the outcome of the Voice referendum.

Use it as a conversation starter or launching point for more in-depth investigation into referendums in Australia, or as part of a broader discussion about facts, political messaging and civil discourse.

This resource is useful for students in Years 7 – 10 studying Civics and Citizenship.
