Seaweed Survival and Adaptations (Stage 2, Stage 3)
These incredible marine algae are vital to the survival of life on earth, helping produce up to 70 percent of the oxygen in our atmosphere and storing a quarter of the worlds carbon.
With 80% of Australians living on the coast, for many of us seaweed are one of our neighbours! These incredible marine algae are vital to the survival of life on earth, helping produce up to 70 percent of the oxygen in our atmosphere and storing a quarter of the worlds carbon.
In this virtual session, students will work with a Gardens educator to learn all about local seaweed species. By classifying and discovering how this living organism grows, survives and reproduces in its aquatic home, students will be inspired to take action and help save our coastal ocean habitats!
Group and classify seaweed
Discover the unique adaptations and lifecycles of a local seaweed species
Build scientific skills by accurately creating a Herbarium specimen and communicating their findings through formal representation
Consider how they can support the survival of seaweeds in their area
Cost: $100 for 1 class up to 30 students/$175 for two classes up to 60 students/ $225 for three classes up to 90 students. Additional classes up to 30 students are charged at $50 per class

Technology and Materials Requirements
If students are learning from home, they will need –
Own device with in-built microphone
If possible it would also be great if students could collect the following materials so they can follow along and prepare their own Herbarium specimen:
1 small piece of water colour paper (or plain white paper) cut to 10cm square in size
2 pieces of cardboard (approximately 10cm squared, cut from an old box)
1 rubber band
6 bits of newspaper cut to approximately 10cm sq in size
1 piece of Chux multi cloth (if available) cut to approximately 10cm sq in size
1 small piece of seaweed from your nearest beach or small branch or flower from the garden (no longer than 7cm in size)
a pencil or pen
If you are dialling in from the classroom, you will need –
A microphone so the presenter can hear the class. Please note that some laptop microphones are difficult to hear, and the positioning of the laptop is important for capturing sound.
A projector or smartboard that allows the students to see the presenter – your classroom smartboard is perfect for this.
Adequate sound volume (usually from your smartboard or external speakers). Laptop speakers are inadequate for your whole classroom to hear the presenter
