Seaweed Science- local living world

  08-Sep-2021      10:00AM
Live Event

Sep

Seaweed is a marine algae vital to the survival of life on earth. Seaweeds produce up to 70 per cent of the oxygen in the atmosphere and store a quarter of the world’s carbon. On top of this 80% of Australians live near the coast which means for most of you seaweed is one of your neighbours!

In this virtual session, students will work with a Gardens Educator to learn about local seaweed species. By classifying and discovering how this living organism grows, survives and reproduces in its watery habitat students will be inspired to help our coastal ocean habitats.

Students will

  • Group and classify seaweed
  • Discover the unique adaptations and lifecycles of a local seaweed
  • Build scientific skills by accurately creating a Herbarium specimen and communicating there findings through this formal representation
  • Consider how they can support the survival of seaweeds in there area

Cost:

$100 incl GST per class of 30 students. Discounts available for multiple classes from the same school attending the same session.

Capacity:

100 students per session

Technology and Materials Requirements

If students are learning from home, they will need –

Internet connection
Own device with in-built microphone

If possible it would also be great if you could collect the following materials

1 small piece of water colour paper (or plain white paper) cut to 10cm square in size
2 pieces of cardboard (approximately 10cm squared, cut from an old box)
1 rubber band
6 bits of newspaper cut to approximately 10cm sq in size
1 piece of Chux multi cloth (if available) cut to approximately 10cm sq in size
1 small piece of seaweed from your nearest beach or small branch or flower from the garden (no longer than 7cm in size)
a pencil or pen

If you are dialling in from the classroom, you will need –

A microphone so the presenter can hear the class. Please note that some laptop microphones are difficult to hear, and the positioning of the laptop is important for capturing sound.
A projector or smartboard that allows the students to see the presenter – your classroom smartboard is perfect for this.
Adequate sound volume (usually from your smartboard or external speakers). Laptop speakers are inadequate for your whole classroom to hear the presenter
The above materials
