Did you know that the Ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and supplies half of oxygen we breathe?

The Australian National Maritime Museum invites students and teachers from stage 2-5 (years 3-10), to participate in this interactive Virtual Excursion with  the curators behind our new One Ocean, Our Future exhibition.

Learn about marine ecosystems, protected areas and food webs while considering the impact humans have on these environments. Discover some of the positive action being taken to protect marine species and focus on how fisheries can become a sustainable food source for Australia.

Students will be engage with short video clips and have the opportunity to ask questions to our Curators in order to further their understanding of these areas.

Emily Jateff is the Curator, Ocean Science and Technology. Her role includes exhibitions, programs and collections acquisition, as well as management of the museum’s 10-year program of exhibitions, events, collections and programs in support of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030. Emily has worked in museums for over 10 years. Before that, she was a practicing maritime and terrestrial archaeologist and has managed laboratories, excavated shipwrecks, produced short films and conducted archaeological fieldwork on a variety of sites. These include four dives to Titanic in a Mir submersible, excavating the landing site for American Civil War hero Harriet Tubman’s raid on Confederate plantations, and searching for Merchant navy shipwrecks on board RV Investigator.

Cay-Leigh Bartnicke is an Assistant Curator of Ocean Science & Technology. She has a Bachelor of Marine Science and over a decade of art training that she weaves together in her work focusing on marine science communication. Cay-Leigh has a special interest in holistic advocacy that intertwines human ethical issues, ocean conservation, local community groups and art into national conversations.
