Plant and Animal Infectious Diseases with the Experts (Stage 6)
May

This live virtual excursion will be led by scientists in the pathology labs of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust and Taronga Conservation Society Australia.
ACTIVITY OUTLINE:
As sickness is so common in our population, it is easy to think that disease is a unique human phenomenon. We watch our plants wither and die thinking nothing of it, and it is not until we have a sick pet, or on rare occasions, hear of a new epidemic decimating agriculture that we even consider disease impacting something that is not human. As we know, disease is not unique to humans and there are pathogens that target all living things. The Biology syllabus does an excellent job in reminding us of this, however, it is easy to return to our anthropomorphic views of disease unless we have other examples to work with.
This live virtual excursion will be led by scientists in the pathology labs of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust and Taronga Conservation Society Australia. They will explain the host response and defence mechanisms, as well as demonstrate the process of inquiry that occurs in the lab as disease moves through populations and determine how to prevent its spread. By hearing case studies from scientists from both The Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust and Taronga Conservation Society Australia, you will have a more thorough and holistic understanding of Biology Module 7 Infectious Diseases.
Time: 10am-11am Case Study 1 (Taronga Zoo) and 11.30am-12.30am Case study 2 (RBGDT)
Cost: $100 per class for up to 25 students, or $15 per student.
