Lu Yang: DOKU, The Binary World (Stage 4, Stage 5, Stage 6)

On Demand

Students experience the future of technology and art through genderless avatars inspired by anime, video games and Buddhist philosophy: combining creativity, technology, dance, gaming and storytelling

ACTIVITY OUTLINE:

Lu Yang: Doku, The Binary World is a motion-capture performance with two dancers, performing in two different cities but meeting in a virtual environment.

Student’s will begin with an educational introduction about Motion Capture technology, created specifically for Secondary audiences. They will meet the team behind the performance to understand how technology and art have been developed to create this first-of-its kind motion-capture performance.

Following this, students will watch the performance. The work is presented simultaneously across two cities: Hong Kong’s Freespace, West Kowloon Cultural District and the Sydney Opera House. Dancers in the two geographic locations will interact in the same virtual environment, creating an innovative artistic collaboration. The high-energy audiovisual experience draws on Buddhist philosophy, internet culture, video games and the aesthetics of anime.

Shanghai-based artist Lu Yang is the creator of Doku, The Binary World.
