Language & Communication – Drama in the classroom (Stage 3)

In this lesson students will use verbal and non-verbal communication to deepen their understanding of language barriers and relate it to a migrant experience.
ACTIVITY OUTLINE:
How it works:
We provide a lesson plan and instructional videos led by ATYP Teaching Artists, who will talk you through drama and literacy exercises that can be used in your classroom. You can follow along with your class, or watch them for your own professional learning before teaching the lesson.
Activities:
1. Forward to the Past: This is a great exercise to give students an idea of what it might be like to be somewhere where you can’t speak the language – an experience shared by many people who immigrate to Australia. Students will use mime, gesture and sound to explore types of communication.
2. My Obnoxious Opinion: This exercise asks students to agree or disagree with a range of opinions, starting with low stake statements, then increasing in complexity.
Students will:
– Use verbal and non-verbal communication to express ideas and feelings.
– Develop verbal literacy when expressing ideas and opinions.
ATYP On Demand Plus is a special offer for DART attendees booking from the DART site.
