Kingdom of Plants (Stage 3, Stage 4)

No plants, no future! Students will explore why this statement is true, how scientists classify & name plants.


ACTIVITY OUTLINE:

In this virtual excursion students will explore why this statement is true, how scientists classify and name plants and how Botanic Garden’s Scientists are contributing to an understanding of the botanical world. Students will examine the majestic Wollemi Pine and the floral shape of the Proteaceae family as case studies and create their own herbarium specimen just like that of botanical scientists.

Cost: $100 for 1 class up to 30 students/$175 for two classes up to 60 students/ $225 for three classes up to 90 students. Additional classes up to 30 students are charged at $50 per class

A microphone so the presenter can hear the class. Please note that some laptop microphones are difficult to hear, and the positioning of the laptop is important for capturing sound.
A projector or smartboard that allows the students to see the presenter – your classroom smartboard is perfect for this.
Adequate sound volume (usually from your smartboard or external speakers). Laptop speakers are inadequate for your whole classroom to hear the presenter

Classify some plants based on similarities and differences in structural features and use simple keys to assist

Identify, using an example of an organism or group of organisms, where the classification has changed as a result of new evidence from technological developments, scientific discoveries and/or advances in scientific understanding
