Home Program 2023 | Virtual artmaking lesson with an Aboriginal artist (Stage 3)
May

This interactive artmaking lesson is for students involved in The Arts Unit Home Program. Our featured artist for 2023 is Maxine Ryan, inspired by Lola Ryan.
ACTIVITY OUTLINE:
Students and teachers participating in the 2023 Home program work with a professional Aboriginal artist to create an artwork in their own school. Home, an expansive 3-term program, connects professional Aboriginal artists, students, and teachers with local, regional galleries and the Art Gallery of NSW to explore cultural practice and artmaking. The program includes professional development for teachers and the support to deliver a bespoke visual arts program culminating in an exhibition at a regional gallery.
Maxine Ryan is an Aboriginal elder from La Perouse. She is an educator and artist from a family of renowned shell artists going back generations. Her mother, Lola Ryan, who was of Tharawal/Eora descent, also lived in La Perouse and learned shellworking from her family. The practice of collecting and making art from shells is passed down through women in a number of Aboriginal families from the region.
