Growing Sustainable STEMs – Stages 2 & 3
Millions of Australians live in cities, and it can be a challenge finding garden spaces that help keep us healthy and nourished. In this virtual session, students will work with a Gardens Educator to identify environmental challenges in cities and explore potential solutions through a range of vertical garden designs used in our gardens. After watching a live demonstration of a small space garden build, students will be challenged to use the Design Process in designing their own sustainable garden that will survive and produce food in a small space!
- Develop an understanding of why gardens in the city are important
- Address the challenge of garden designs in highly urbanised areas
- Explore a variety of vertical garden designs
- Experience the construction of a a small space garden that provides food through live demonstration
- Engage 21st Thinking Skills to begin designing a small space garden for their home or school using recycled materials!
Cost: $100 for 1 class up to 30 students/$175 for two classes up to 60 students/ $225 for three classes up to 90 students. Additional classes up to 30 students are charged at $50 per class

Requirements for this excursion
If students are learning from home, they will need –
Own device with in-built microphone
If possible, printed or downloaded copy of the Growing Sustainable STEM’s Journal (this will be emailed to the organising teacher prior to the virtual excursion)
If you are dialling in from the classroom, you will need –
A microphone so the presenter can hear the class. Please note that some laptop microphones are difficult to hear, and the positioning of the laptop is important for capturing sound.
A projector or smartboard that allows the students to see the presenter – your classroom smartboard is perfect for this.
Adequate sound volume (usually from your smartboard or external speakers). Laptop speakers are inadequate for your whole classroom to hear the presenter
Printed or downloaded copies of the Growing Sustainable STEM’s Journal (this will be emailed to the organising teacher prior to the virtual excursion)

The excursion will begin with an interactive presentation introducing why gardens in cities are important and a refresh of the Living World outcomes focusing on the needs of living things. This portion of the lesson will have students thinking about key environmental issues faced by big cities.
The students will then explore solutions offered through small space gardens by exploring a number of designs used in the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, including a virtual tour of the amazing Growing Green Wall at the Calyx which has over 1800 plants!
Students can record valuable information and design thinking components in their journal as they take a look at these different examples, before we brainstorm together to come up with some potential garden design ideas that meet the key needs of living things.
Finally we will finish off sharing how to make one type of small space garden that produces food and is made from recycled materials that might be found around your house!
After the excursion, students are encouraged to consolidate their learning by designing their own small space garden, for either their home or school. Be sure to send us in your designs – we love seeing them!
