Food in Australia (Stage 5)

  10-May-2022      01:45PM
Live Event
10
May

Join our First Nations Educators to explore the timeline of Food in Australia!

ACTIVITY OUTLINE:

Explore the timeline of food in Australia from Aboriginal culture pre-1788 to the First Farm, through to the presence of many different cultural groups settling in Australia, and how this has led to our cuisine becoming an exciting fusion of bush food ingredients and flavours. Students will also explore the recent popularity of bush foods and how the First Nations diet has evolved as a result of colonisation.

Students will:

-Watch an easy-to-make damper session that can be replicated in the classroom or at home. Damper has been an important staple of Aboriginal people’s diets both traditionally and through colonisation.
-Explore the different types of traditional foods eaten by Aboriginal people, including the methods of collection and processing as well as how the Aboriginal diet was impacted by location.
-Learn traditional and contemporary methods of cooking and the uses of native bush foods by Aboriginal people.
-Learn how traditional bush foods are now incorporated into contemporary, modern cuisine.

Cost: $100 for 1 class up to 30 students/$175 for two classes up to 60 students/ $225 for three classes up to 90 students. Additional classes up to 30 students are charged at $50 per class

Capacity: 300 students per session
