Learn about first contacts in 1770 at Botany Bay with interactive hands on activities


ACTIVITY OUTLINE:

During the virtual lesson students will:

Learn about Dharawal life and culture for the first inhabitants before Cook’s arrival at Kamay
Participate in a role play to understand some of the significant events when James Cook sailed into Botany Bay in 1770
Work as a botanist or botanical artist to create a drawing just as Solander and Parkinson did in 1770

The lesson will be hands-on, educational, fun and interactive.

Lessons will be presented by NSW Department of Education Environmental Education teachers.

For schools with less than 20 students a discount will apply. $3.00 per student

Schools will be charged prior to the session.

Payment Instructions

An interschool journal or purchase order will be emailed to you upon your registration, along with the teacher pack of information.  Payment will be processed prior to the event.

Learning Intentions & Success Criteria

Learning Intentions

We are learning to:

Identify and explain different perspectives of events at Botany Bay in 1770,
Study Dharawal artefacts and interpret their possible uses,
Create botanical drawings.

Success Criteria

I can:

Explain the different perspectives of the original inhabitants at Botany Bay and the crew of the Endeavour,
Identify various artefacts and how they might have been used by Dharawal people at the time of first contact in 1770,
Draw a botanical specimen.

Cancellation Policy

Our school holds limited seating, and many of our classes sell out. For this reason, we request that you cancel at least 72 business hours before your scheduled lesson. This will allow us to offer your spot to another school.

You may call us on 02 9668 9889 or alternatively cancel on the Dart Learning Website.
If you give us at least 72 hours’ notice of your need to cancel, we will credit your payment toward another lesson.

However, if you do not cancel with at least 72 hours’ notice, you will lose any payments you have already made.
