
National School Citizen Science BioBlitz 2023: Discover the Biodiversity in your Area (Stage 2, Stage 3, Stage 4)

Students can become citizen scientists and participate in the National School Citizen Science BioBlitz 2023 to help gather information about Australia’s biodiversity. Teachers can learn about citizen science, BioBlitzes, and activities and links to curriculum.
ACTIVITY OUTLINE:
Students can contribute to important data on the biodiversity in their school grounds or local area.
Teachers will learn how to contribute to the National School BioBlitz, help students to contribute to the CSIRO’s Atlas of Living Australia biodiversity database, and use citizen science for school activities relating to Key Learning Areas.

- Participating in citizen science by everyday Australians helps scientists to fill information gaps, identify species, understand species’ declines and help regeneration strategies

Pre Event Requirements
REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE INCLUDE JOINING THE B&B BIOBLITZ PROJECT ON INATURALIST BEFOREHAND (TO BE COVERED IN THE OnDemand WORKSHOP).
Workshops will provide knowledge and skills in:
• What is citizen science?
• How citizen science can help biodiversity and other scientific research
• Curriculum links: areas and some examples
• Basic how-to of logging on and uploading observations
• Using iNaturalist: Learn about species in your local or broader area; find them on a map; how to link to Wikipedia and information about taxonomy and status; learning about dashboards;
• Basic how-to of taking images to upload
