The Dreamtime Story of Buriburi, the Humback Whale (short film)

View Sydney Harbour through an Aboriginal lens. Year 3 – S2 Year 4 – S2 Year 5 – S3 Year 6 – S3 Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Year 11 – S6 Year 12 – S6 TAFE Students Teacher Parent The Dreamtime Story of Buriburi, the Humback Whale (short film) Step into the story as you consider the origins of Sydney Harbour from the perspective of Coastal Sydney’s Traditional Owners.

The Dreamtime Story of Buriburi, the Humback Whale
Ray was originally told the story of Buriburi by the senior women in his community and, in this brand-new video, he retells it with the aid of the Gamay Dancers of the Gadigal and Bidjigal nation. Set against the backdrop of Biloela Lawn, Cockatoo Island / Wareamah, the Gamay Dancers complement Ray’s words with a traditional performance that captures the essence of the Buriburi story.

Ray Ingrey, Chairperson of the Gujaga Foundation and a Dharawal community representative, shared a local Dreamtime Story of Buriburi, the humpback whale, at the launch of the Bondi to Manly Walk (B2M).
The organisers of the B2M embraced the Dreaming figure as their symbol and it is visible on signage throughout the 80 km coastal walk.

A Collaboration: The Harbour Trust & Gujaga Foundation proudly presents – The Dreamtime Story of Buriburi, the Humback Whale. Free Harbour Trust Ray Ingrey is a Dharawal person from the La Perouse Aboriginal community. He has a number of leadership roles within his community, including the Chairperson of the Gujaga Foundation. The Gujaga Foundation is the peak organisation leading language, culture and research activities within the La Perouse Aboriginal community. Ray believes it’s important that “our young ones grow up with a solid cultural foundation and become strong with who they are and where they belong”. He believes this will put them on the right path in achieving any goal they set in the future. On Demand: Life in the past…stinks!

We know life in the past was very different to today. But while we can’t go back in time, we can still visit the places where people once lived and worked – and do some of their jobs! Year 1 – S1 Year 2 – S1 On Demand: Life in the past…stinks! Using evidence from documents, images and oral history can help us better understand what life was like, in the past, for different people. In this on demand experience, students will see what life was like for:

• a servant working at Vaucluse House mansion in the 1860s

• a farm hand working at Rouse Hill Estate in the 1870s

• a mum living at Susannah Place, in Sydney’s Rocks area, in the 1920s

Some of the jobs they had to do were a bit smelly, some were really hard work and others…well they really, really stink! All About Women (Digital On Demand Talks): Influencers are the New Public Intellectuals

On INSTA you’re just as likely to get a lesson in medieval architecture as you are a teeth-whitening strip.  What’s it mean for education & public discourse to be wrapped up with online personas. Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Year 11 – S6 Year 12 – S6 TAFE Students Teacher Parent All About Women (Digital On Demand Talks): Influencers are the New Public Intellectuals For a long time, the word ‘influencer’ conjured stereotypes of activewear and dubious hot takes.

But it’s 2024 and social media has well-and-truly revolutionised the public square. Today, the word influencer can refer to an activist or academic who shares short videos on TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram to explain complex concepts on niche subjects for a global audience. From Substack to Twitter threads, podcasting to Patreon, there are many opportunities to monetise knowledge-sharing. What does it mean for women to be able to build audiences free from traditional gatekeepers? Or are the gatekeepers now just the shady algorithms of BigTech bros? Come along for a heated and hilarious debate with five very public, very intellectual influencers.

All About Women (Digital On Demand Talks): Mary Beard

Join the world-famous classics scholar and feminist icon Mary Beard for this captivating conversation on her first-ever visit to Australia. Year 7 – S4 Year 8 – S4 Year 9 – S5 Year 10 – S5 Year 11 – S6 Year 12 – S6 TAFE Students Teacher Parent All About Women (Digital On Demand Talks): Mary Beard Author of countless books, star of dozens of television shows, and perhaps the one woman who thinks about the Roman Empire more than any man on TikTok, Beard gets to the nitty gritty of misogyny and power from the ancient world to today.

For the first time, Sydney audiences will hear directly from Cambridge Professor Emerita Dame Mary Beard in an event that delves into the broad range of her career – from the ruins of ancient Rome to the trenches of Twitter. No one is better equipped to tell us about how power is skewed along gender lines than Mary Beard, whose latest book, Emperor of Rome, gives us a nuanced understanding of sex, class, race, and politics in the ancient world, and whose astute observations of modern political power have shone a light on the remarkably persistent patterns of patriarchy today.
